March 16, 2016

Dear Parents and Friends,

I write to you today to inform you that construction on the building renovation started on Tuesday, March 15th.   PC Construction is on site and is in the process of completing the set-up work.   A few changes to keep in mind.

Parent Parking:  Due to the fact the new portion of the building will be located close to Limerick Road, we will lose access to the existing front entrance and the parking in front.   Our new main entrance will be around back at the gym entrance doors.  Mary Lou Havey will be stationed in that hallway to welcome visitors.   There will be visitor parking constructed out back as well.   Additionally, PC Construction will be adding temporary staff parking in front of the “D” wing to make up for the loss of spaces.  This work should be completed by the middle of next week.

Bus Traffic:  A new “Bus and Construction Vehicle entrance only” access road is being constructed starting on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.  This new entrance will allow buses to pull into the property to pick-up and drop-off students.  The new location for bus students to enter and exit the building will be down by the Parks and Recreation entrance.   Please keep in mind, this entrance is for BUS and CONSTRUCTION vehicle traffic ONLY.  This work should be completed by the middle of next week.  All parents who are visiting the school should enter using the existing entrance driveway and proceed to the back lot.

Student drop-off and pick-up by parents:  No changes are planned.  We will use the same traffic pattern as we have in the past.  Parents will drive out back to drop and pick-up their children.

Staff parking:   Will now be limited to parking out back, in the side lot by the Parks and Recreation entrance and in front of the “D” wing.  If you are dropping off or picking up your child from Parks and Recreation, please keep in mind this entrance will now consist of two way traffic.  Please proceed with caution.

Student flow around the building:  Very shortly, it will be necessary to demolish the front of the building by the kindergarten entrance.   This will mean students and staff will no longer have the ability to walk from the 4-5 wing to the K-3 wing from the inside of the building.  For that reason, PC has constructed an outdoor covered walkway from the gym area to the mudroom in the “B” wing.  This covered walkway will provide access to get from one building to the other.

While we understand these changes cause inconvenience, we also know they are temporary.   With the help of a fine contractor and outstanding architect, we expect to move into the new portion of the building in early October of 2016.  When we do that – it will all seem worth it.

It you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to give me a call.  We appreciate all your support.   On the next page, I have added a few photos so you can see some of the work that is occurring.  I will plan to keep you updated on the progress of the project on a regular basis.

With Appreciation,

Kevin Crowley

Cathy Bansmer, who has spent the last 43 years teaching at Mildred L. Day School was our featured “Digger” during the ground breaking.   12 other students, chosen at random, played a role in the ground breaking.   The school also honored the fifth grade travel basketball team who recently won the championship at the 11th annual Waterboro Invitational.  It was quite a day!

It was great theater as our kindergarteners and first graders watched the construction of the new covered walk way.  This pathway will provide access from the Gym area over to the mudroom in the “B” and allow our students to get from building to building during the construction.
