RSU 21 calls attention to critical role of federal funding in letter to Maine's congressional delegation

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Regional School Unit 21 (RSU 21) has issued a formal appeal to Maine's congressional delegation, emphasizing the pivotal role federal education funding plays in supporting local students' academic and developmental needs.

In a letter to Sen. Susan Collins, Sen. Angus King, and Rep. Chellie Pingree, district leaders emphasized that federal resources are not optional extras but fundamental necessities for students' success. 

"Federal funding is not just beneficial, it is fundamental to ensuring all students have access to the education and resources they need to succeed," the letter stated.

RSU 21 relies on $1,349,129 in federal funds to support its 2,380 students across Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel. These funds enable critical programs, including special education services, school nutrition initiatives, and targeted academic support. The funding has led to significant improvements, such as a 65% increase in meal consumption after implementing free school meals.

"Without this support, many children will struggle to meet even the most basic educational and developmental milestones," district leaders warned. The funding supports vital services, including specialized instruction for students with disabilities, nutritional support, and professional development for teachers.

RSU 21 also uses these funds to support 477 students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP), provide free meals to all students, and offer specialized services that ensure every child has an opportunity to succeed.

"We ask for your commitment in safeguarding these essential resources," the letter concludes.

The letter was signed by RSU 21 Superintendent Terri I. Cooper, Ed.D., RSU 21 School Board of Directors Chair Matthew Stratford, and co-signed by the rest of the school board.
