Referral
If you have concerns about your child's learning or development, RSU 21 is here to help. Anyone who knows the child can start the referral process, including parents/guardians, teachers, school professional staff, or outside agency representatives. Referrals should be made in writing and submitted to the Building Principal and/or Director of Special Services. If you need help putting your concerns in writing, any school staff member will be glad to assist you.
Once your written referral is received, the school will gather existing information and data about your child. An Advanced Written Notice will be sent as confirmation of receipt, and a team meeting will be scheduled within 15 school days to review your concerns and determine next steps.
If your child already has an IEP and is new to RSU 21, we will ensure comparable services are in place right away while a new plan is developed in collaboration with you.
This process is guided by the Maine Department of Education Regulations (Ch. 101), and your family's rights are protected throughout. We encourage you to review the Procedural Safeguards, which outline your rights as a parent at every stage of the special education process. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way.
