KES Newsletter - October 27, 2017

Hello KES Families,

I hope you are well! First and foremost, I want to let you know that RSU 21 has increased pay for Substitute Teachers to $100.00 per day, effective immediately. If you have 2 years of college experience and are willing to submit to a background check, we hope you consider filling out an application. Applications can be picked up at the RSU 21 Central Office located here at KES. Subbing is a great way to get involved in your child’s school experience, and we love to have parents with us for the day!

This year we will be setting a goal to improve student attendance. Student attendance is one of the biggest factors related to student achievement that parents can influence. If you are having trouble getting your child to come to school, please reach out to me for help. I will be sharing information throughout the year this year to support parents. Remember, they say eighty percent of life is about showing up… so let us know how we can help!

I also want to share with you that the KES Kids Chorus has had a couple busy weeks of rehearsals leading up to a very big, very special event yesterday. Our chorus, along with students from each elementary school in our district performed for the Maine School Management Association’s annual conference at the Augusta Civic Center. Generally it is middle school and high school bands and singers who are invited to perform. Our chorus did an incredible job and when they finished, they got a standing ovation. We are really proud of them, as they represented our school, our district, and our community in a really big way.

Just a reminder that while we do not wear costumes to school on Halloween next Tuesday, we encourage students to wear orange & black, purple & green, or shirts with pumpkins and other seasonal images on them. Decorative head bands and sports uniforms (no cleats) are great, and limited face paint (like wiskers) is fine, as long as we can still tell who the students are! This morning at our Friday Morning Meeting, Officer Carney provided us with a presentation on Halloween Safety, and our 3rd Grade KES Violin Ensemble performed. Both were impressive acts!

One more reminder about our Veterans Celebration on November 17th. If someone in your family is a US Veteran or serves in the military, please forward their names and contact information to Linda Mattuchio or (207) 985-4402 as soon as possible, and have them plan to be here with us on November 17th at 8:15 am!

Also, it is not too late to sign up for the Italian Night (Spaghetti Supper) at KES on November 8th. This event, sponsored by KEPTA and KES will support Honor Flight and Wreaths Across America. Please use the following link to make your reservation and plan to join us at this fun event for a great cause!

With the holiday season just around the corner, I want to talk about a melancholy, but important topic. For most of us, the holidays are a wonderful time to enjoy special moments with family and friends, but for families who are struggling in some way, it can be the most difficult time of year. From poverty, to food insecurity, through grief, depression and beyond, we have a wide range of supports in our district and in our community, so please let me know if your family or a family you know is struggling. Every year we sponsor many children and families by providing holiday meals, as well as connections through the town, the Rotary, and many religious organizations. St. Davids, in particular, is extremely generous with families in our school, regardless of whether or not those families are part of their congregation. Also, on Monday, November 13th at 3:15pm, and again on Monday, November 20th at 9:00am, I will be providing a 65 minute informational session on Suicide Prevention here at KES. Similarly, confidential support is available 24 hours a day by accessing the Maine Crisis Hotline at 1-888-568-1112, or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-799-4889. Again, please let me know if you or someone you know needs support. We want the coming days to be warm and bright for everyone, and if we are thoughtful and vigilant, we can definitely make that happen.
