KES Newsletter - March 2, 2018

Hello KES Families,

Happy Friday! I hope you are well. It has been a nice quiet week here at KES. The week following a vacation is always nice. Everyone is rested, rejuvenated and focused. The time period between February vacation and April vacation is our last nice stretch of academic time with fewer interruptions before the draw of warmer weather and excitement of end-of-year events kick in. Please help us make the most of this valuable time by recommitting to attendance and punctuality. Children are more focused and available to learn in the morning, so that is when teachers present their most important lessons. Being late to school results in more lost learning opportunities than time taken away in the afternoon. Please reach out to me if you need ideas or support for coping with hectic mornings or creating a routine.

I want to thank all of the Kindergarten parents who attended our presentation on The Neuroscience of Parenting last night, with Stevie Westmoreland. We had a great turn-out and we hope to see you for Part 2 and Part 3 on March 8th and March 15th at 6:00pm in the KES Library. Special Thanks to Mrs. Towne for organizing this great opportunity.

I also want to thank all of the parents who have signed up to volunteer here at KES for Wellness Day this coming Wednesday. It is wonderful to watch all of our students circulate through the Wellness workshops that are offered for each grade. We are still looking for volunteers to cut fruit both on Wellness day itself (3/7) and on the day prior (3/6). If you are available to help please email Mr. McCarthy at pmccarthy@rsu21.net. Special thanks to the KES Wellness Team, Mr. McCarthy, Mrs. MacLeod, Mrs. Goldberg, Mrs. Dixon, Mr. Leskowsky, and Mrs.Paquette for organizing this great event for our students.

I also want to thank all of the parents who reached out to me and met with me in the wake of the recent tragic events in Parkland, Florida, as well as the members of the Kennebunk Police Department for their increased presence here at KES since that day. We feel very supported and very safe. This coming Early Release Wednesday, after the children leave at noon, our entire staff, as well as staff members from across the district will be participating in an Active Shooter training with the Kennebunk Police Department and the Portland Police Department here at KES. This will be the second training of this kind that we have completed with these departments in recent years. I will also be participating in a three-day training over April Vacation with the RSU 21 Facilities Director and Resource Officers on School Security Assessment, in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, called Protecting Our Schools. Additionally, Dr. Hawes is working with local law enforcement to consider new safety recommendations being made by the Maine Department of Education. We will share new ideas and new practices as we implement them. Again, we appreciate everyone’s unwavering and ongoing support.

One more reminder for parents of incoming Kindergarten students. We invite you to come to KES next Friday, March 9th, to finalize the registration process. You can stop by any time between 9:00am and 3:00pm that day. It is a quick process, so by all means, bring your rising Kindergartner with you!

And finally, we will soon be announcing the results of our Jump Rope for Heart event. Donations are still coming in….and we are still taking them! We greatly appreciate your generosity. Have a wonderful weekend!

Yours in Education,

Mr. Quinn
