Hello KES Families,
I hope you are well! I first want to recognize all of you who sent children in wearing orange on Wednesday in honor of Autism Acceptance...everywhere you looked, it was a beautiful sea of orange here at KES, so thank you for your help with that! I also wanted to let you know that all students participated in Earth Day activities today here at KES. Given all of the sunshine we enjoyed today, it was a perfect day for outdoor activities.
Next, I want to let you know about a special free event here at KES over April Vacation. From 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday, April 22nd, Ladder, a 65-foot inflatable whale modeled after a real fin whale in the Gulf of Maine who has been studied since 1996, is the special guest for a free b-EARTHDAY Party in the KES gym. Kennebunk High School Environmental Awareness Club member Willy Jones, who has been working to educate the community about the dangers to marine life from balloons and trash in the ocean, initiated the event because he thought some time spent with Ladder would make a lasting impression on children. Willy shared a special presentation here at KES last year on the same topic and the kids really loved his presentation. Willy has a wonderful way of presenting information to children that is customized for their developmental level. Blue Ocean scientists will be on hand during the event to answer questions and share its whale artifact collection, including real baleen. Willy will also give a short presentation about the dangers of both latex and mylar (plastic nylon) balloons to animals and children. At this event there will be a craft table where children can make origami jumping frogs to take home, and the first 50 children through the door can enter a random drawing to win a whale adoption package that includes a 5”x7” color photo of a real Gulf of Maine whale, sightings history for that whale, a personalized adoption certificate, a full-color species fact sheet, a Blue Ocean Society decal, and a one-year subscription to its newsletters. Sightings updates of the pet whale will follow via e-mail and in the Blue Ocean Society newsletters. This program begins at 2 p.m. and is limited to the first 150 people. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, visit Balloon-Free-Kennebunk on Facebook or email: firstname.lastname@example.org and check out the attached flyer. We hope you can make it!
If you would like to join us for Bikes for Books, that event will take place at KES Friday Morning Meeting on the Friday following April Vacation, April 27th. If you have never experienced a 42 Bicycle give-away, it is a pretty exciting thing to see!
And finally...I have some “Save the Date” information for parents of 3rd Graders. Earlier this year, the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel (EFKA) in cooperation with the Kennebunk Elementary PTA (KEPTA), generously supported and funded an African Drumming artist-in-residence experience for all students at KES, MLD and KCS, including a special focus on 3rd grade. All students at MLD and KCS have already participated in this enrichment experience, and all students at KES will enjoy the same beginning on May 7th, when Artist in Residence drummer, Michael Wingfield, begins his three-week stay at KES. We will offer drumming performances at the Friday Morning Meetings that fall during the residency, and the final aspect of this program includes a culminating performance for all 3rd graders in the district at the new KHS theater on the evening of May 25th. 3rd Graders will be bussed to KHS on the morning of May 25th to rehearse from 9:30am to 10:30am. Parents will need to have 3rd Graders at KHS by 5:30pm, and the performance will run from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Because this event falls on the Friday evening heading into Memorial Day Weekend, we would like to know in advance if your child is not able to attend, as students who are not planning to participate in the evening event will not need to attend the rehearsal during the day. If your family has plans that conflict with the May 25th event, please email Linda Mattuchio at email@example.com to let us know, and we will plan accordingly. Please thank members of EFKA and KEPTA for this great opportunity when you see them!
We also want to remind parents of incoming Pre-K children, that the Pre-K informational Session will happen on the Thursday evening following April vacation, April 26th here at KES beginning at 5:30 pm. For more information on the new public Pre-K program begin offered here at KES next year, check out “Pre-K” under “Menu” on the RSU 21 Website.
And one final note, that the 2018-2019 RSU 21 school calendar has been corrected to reflect the correct date for Dr. Martin Luther King Day date next year. You can access the updated calendar for next year on the RSU 21 website, and don't forget to follow us on Twitter, @KbunkElementary. Have a great week everyone!
Yours in Education,
