Hello KES Families,
I hope you are well. We just have a couple messages for you today….one from KEPTA and one from MSK. Thank you for reading!
Staff Appreciation Week is next week! This is a great time to show our awesome staff how much we appreciate everything they do for our kids. Last year we started to change the focus of Staff Appreciation so that it would come more from the children… it was a huge hit last year so we are sticking with the same focus this year. Please click on the link below to see the schedule so you can talk to your kids about what they can do to show their appreciation for the staff.
Below is a link for the sign up genius. This week is only a success when everyone pitches in!! If you click the link you will see the schedule for the week and the sign up spots where we need help. Please spread the word. Our awesome staff deserve to be shown how awesome they really are!! If you have any questions at all please let us know.
Another thing we REALLY need is donations for the raffle on Friday. The staff and kids LOVE LOVE LOVE this. The kids get so excited to see the staff win! Its so super fun. If you own a business this is a great way to get your name out. If you don't, you can still purchase/donate/make items for the raffle. The raffle item(s) you donate can be specified for one school, either, or both! Get creative! Anything you can think of is appreciated!!! -KEPTA
Middle School of the Kennebunk’s 8th grader, Maggie Nelson, didn’t have to put a lot of thought into her required community service project. For years she’s wanted to put on a talent show for all ages and this project was a great excuse to light up the stage. She didn’t even have to give a second thought to where the proceeds would go. Having volunteered at the front desk the previous summer, she knew what a vibrant community The Center was and knew it could use her help.
The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Lower Village. It serves the towns of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel. Its mission is to be a warm and welcoming environment for adults 50 and older. It offers programs and volunteer opportunities that foster healthy aging and meaningful contributions to the community. The Center fundraises over 60% of their budget every year and less than one percent comes from municipal support.
While volunteering, Nelson watched as seniors in her community engaged in various activities like bridge and yoga. She learned about the community outreach programs the center has that support the seniors in the three towns. She asked questions and learned about The Center’s need for support from local businesses, members, and donations from the community at large. She also learned that according to a 2016 census, 51% of Kennebunk’s population is 50 years or older. It was then she realized that she could use her idea for a talent show to help support this population.
“When I learned how much money they have to raise on their own and how much they do for our community, I knew I wanted to help,” said Nelson. “This is the most fun place I have ever volunteered. Every penny made from the show will come right here. We need community support to make this happen.”
In 2017 volunteers donated over 6,000 hours of their time to The Center. They served over 700 individuals. Nelson is excited to be a part of that and to bring the Seniors together with the younger population.
The Variety Show takes place on Saturday, May 19 at 2PM in the cafeteria of the Middle School of the Kennebunks, 60 Thompson Road, Kennebunk. Admission is $5 per person with a $20 family limit. Performers get in free. There will be an intermission with snacks available to purchase.
The show is open to all ages and everyone is encouraged to participate. While there have been 2 audition dates already, one more date has been opened. You can audition on Friday, May 4 from 3-5 at The Center. To schedule your audition or, if you are an established act or have a video you could submit instead of an in-person audition, you can do so by reaching out to Nelson by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also call her mother, Mandy, at 508-410-9754. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the event or you can pre-purchase at The Center starting on May 1. The Center hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30am – 4pm and Friday 8:30 am -1pm.
And finally, just one reminder that May 4th is School Nutrition day, so thank you lunchroom staff when you get a chance!
Have a great weekend!
