KES Newsletter - September 27, 2018

Hello KES Families,

I hope you are well today. I am sending my newsletter early this week because I wanted to remind Kindergarten through 2nd grade parents that we have our second Friday Morning Meeting of the year tomorrow, and that our new starting time is 8:30am. Dates for October remaining Assemblies this year include 10/12, 10/26, 11/9, 11/30, 12/14, 1/11, 1/25, 2/8, 3/1, 3/15, 3/29, 4/26, 5/10, 5/24, 6/14. Pre-K students will attend for the first time on 26th. They will be introduced by classroom, so we hope Pre-K parents will join us that day!

And since I am talking about Pre-K, I just want to mention how incredibly well our Pre-K students have adjusted to their new routine. They arrive each morning with big smiles and big eyes, and they enter the building like they have been doing so for years. By day two they were walking in a line, sitting in a circle, raising their hands, listening to directions, and truly looking like students. I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity to support our district’s youngest learners.

Tomorrow morning the KES Kids Chorus will perform at Friday Morning Meeting for the first time this year, with a special performance of “Start With Hello” in honor of the Sandy Hook Promise work our district is currently participating in. We had students from KHS and all available KES staff members outside to ensure that each arriving student had a day that would “Start with Hello.” For more information on this initiative, visit www.sandyhookpromise.org.

Also regarding KES Kids CHorus, we are in the process of hiring an additional chorus conductor for the program, so students who are on the wait-list will soon be able to be added to the roster for KES Kids Chorus! Please stay tuned!

This year, as a district, we are working to improve Student Attendance. Our motto for this initiative is “Strive for Under Five,” which means fewer than five absences over the course of the year. To that end I wanted to remind everyone that February Vacation is during the week from Monday February 18th through Friday February 22nd. We are encouraging everyone to book their winter vacations to happen between Saturday, February 16th through Sunday February 24th. Similarly, April Vacation is the week from Monday April 15th through Friday April 19th. We are encouraging everyone to book their spring vacations to happen between Saturday, April 13th through Sunday, April 21st. Children who are out for 10 days during the school year are considered chronically absent. Chronically absent children score, on average, a grade level behind their peers. Thank you for your help with this!

And finally, if you think you might qualify for Free and Reduced lunch, just remember that applications must be completed yearly. We offer the availability of applying online. The process is safe, secure, private and available anytime, anywhere. Please visit http://rsu21.nlappscloud.com and follow the step-by-step instructions. You may also request a paper application be mailed to you. Please email Ellen Demmons with the request for a paper application: edemmons@rsu21.net.

Your in Education,
Mr. Quinn
