KES Newsletter May 17, 2019

Hello KES families!

I hope you are well today. It was great seeing so many parents and families here last Friday for the 1st grade Pirate Dance. Our motor break got everyone on their feet to stomp and dance along with our 1st grade pirates this year, and our 2nd graders remembered it well from last year and were extra excited to dust of their Pirate dancing skills and join in the fun.

We also had a special presentation by students on the KES Green Team. For more than 20 years our speech pathologist, Mrs. Walters, has been in charge of the KES Green Team and challenging our oldest students to lead the way at KES in being globally responsible and helping our planet by recycling paper, cardboard and bottles. As you know, for every bottle we return we get a nickel, and the KES Green Team has recycled over 45,000 bottles over the last two decades which has added up to $2,271.00. Because she is retiring this year, Mrs Walters and the Green Team have been considering ways to spend that money, and last week they voted unanimously to make that bottle money the first official donation towards the new inclusive and adaptive playground that our PTA, KEPTA, is proposing for KES. KEPTA was on-hand to receive the “Big Check” from the students on the Green Team, and to officially launch the fundraising campaign. We appreciate everyone who made the trip to Dairy Queen on Wednesday for what will result in a second major donation to the project. There is a great article in the current edition of the York County Coast Star (Seacoast Online) about this exciting endeavor. Please check it out!

Tomorrow (Friday) is “Bring Your Stuffed Animal to School Day” and we are also honoring a 2nd grade petition requesting cake be served with hot lunch….consequently hot lunch tomorrow will be Pizza, Salad and Cake. We work very hard to promote healthy eating habits here at KES and to limit sweets, but the student petition outlined a very persuasive argument for serving cake once in a while, especially since students are doing such a great job this year for the first time with composing their food waste at Sharkbites, the KES Cafe, and also for making sure that they dont accidentally throw away the new silverware that has replaced plastic flatware. So cake it is! Please consider joining us for hot lunch at Sharkbites tomorrow if you can.

And if you have not already filled out our annual parent satisfaction survey, tomorrow (Friday) is your last chance to provide us with feedback in this way.  We always strive to create the best educational environment possible, and knowing how students and parents feel about different aspects of the school experience only helps us better meet the needs of children and families. Thank you for taking the time to share how you feel with us!

And finally, I have three announcements this week that KEPTA has asked me to share in their own words….

KEPTA is incredibly thankful to the KES GREEN TEAM for their donation this past Friday morning at Friday Morning Meeting. This is the first donation to the Inclusive Playground Project and we are honored that it has come from the students and faculty at KES. Their investment in the playground project will hopefully inspire others to contribute to such a worthy build. Should you want to learn more about the playground project or stay up to date on fundraising events and progress,  please follow the Playground on: Facebook@Kennebunkplayground,

or on the website at The playground fundraising committee can also be reached at

KEPTA has a Box Tops collection drive that will continue until Friday, May 17. Please send in any tops with your child into his or her classroom. The top 4 classes per grade to bring in the most Box Tops will get a prize. Winners will be announced before the end of the school year! All proceeds benefit the PTA which in turn supports KES teachers & educational programs.

The KES School Store is open online! Run by KEPTA, proceeds from sales also benefit the school. Order through the A&W Promotional Products web site & pick up at their store in Arundel. No paper orders are being accepted at this time, so visit the following link to make your purchase & check out all the new items available like new zippered sweatshirts for adults & kids.

Have a great weekend! Yours in Education,

Mr. Quinn
