KES Newsletter May 31, 2019

Hello KES Families,

I hope you are well today. This morning KES hosted the RSU 21 Game of Champions for the fourth year in a row. Our whole school was out on the field cheering our RSU 21 athletes on, and it was a heartwarming wonderful day. We had several of our KES alumni, who now participate in Band at SRS, here with us performing during the Awards Ceremony that followed, and we were grateful to have students from the RSU 21 Alternative Education program at KHS here with us for the last two days, helping both with Game of Champions and helping with the KES Fairy Garden project.

I wanted to let parents know that the Butterfly Release and unveiling of the Fairy Garden during our annual KES BBQ on June 7th will feel like a celebration rather than a dedication. It will be an upbeat and exciting opportunity for our students to experience the garden for the first time.

Having said that, many children here are aware that the garden has been created in honor of Sia Van Wyck, a KES student who passed away two summers ago. Because many of our older students knew Sia, and most of our current students know her brother, some of the children are remembering or thinking about Sia at this time. I want to let you know that it is not uncommon for children to feel some sadness when they hear about a loss such as this, and for some children it can trigger grief from losses in their own lives. It is a normal reaction and it generally passes quickly, but please reach out to me or to our school counselor, Kelly Wright, if you feel your child could benefit from support or if we can help you support your child at home.

One of the best ways for both children and adults to process or deal with a loss is to do something positive in honor of the person’s life. In many ways, the Fairy Garden is about that very thing. You can help make our garden flourish by donating a plant for the project. We have a Plant Drop-Off opportunity planned for Monday here at KES. Plant donations will be received during the day at KES from 8:00am to 1:00pm. Included here is a link to the Sign-Up Genius if you would like to provide a plant….thank you in advance for your thoughtful support.

Last night the KES Playground Committee met to make plans for upcoming fundraisers. One way you can support this exciting endeavor is to participate in the Running With Character Family Fun Run on June 7th. It is one of our best events each year and this year it will be held right here at KES, so we hope you can join us! Another way you can support the playground is by donating your bottles and cans to the KEPTA Bottle Drive on June 1st. You can drop off returnables at KES from 11:00am to 3:00pm to donate. Please see the attached flyers for more information on the Running With Character Family Fun Run and the KEPTA Bottle Drive.

For the last two weeks Kindergarten through 2nd graders have experienced our annual Violin Artist-in-Residency here at KES. Each of those classes had two lessons on how to hold the instrument and how to pluck and bow the strings. They learned the parts of the violin and played some simple songs. If your child is interested in beginning formal study on the violin we have three teachers in the area we can connect you with, so please let us know!
