DISNEY’S ALADDIN JR.
Auditions for MSK’s musical will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9th and 10th. Callbacks will be on Thursday, October 11th.  If students are interested in auditioning, they should sign up for an audition day on the bulletin board outside Mrs. Mathews’ room. They should also take an audition packet and complete the paperwork before auditioning. If you have questions you can email Mrs. Mathews at kmathews@rsu21.net. Performance dates are: January 24, 25 and 26 at 7pm, and January 27 at 2pm.

SCHOOL PHOTOS - MONDAY, OCT 15TH
MSK school photos are scheduled for Monday, October 15th and photo forms were distributed to homeroom teachers earlier this week.  If you haven’t seen one come home yet, please ask your child about it. It’s important that every child be photographed (even if you don’t plan on purchasing prints) so they can be issued an ID card and have their picture in the yearbook. HOMEWORK HELP
Homework Help has begun and runs every Monday-Wednesday that school is in session from 2:15 until the late bus. Students can stay and get their work done in a quiet, structured environment. Please note: Once students sign in to this after school program, they are required to stay the entire time until 3:45 unless a parent calls the main office to dismiss them early.   This year, the advisor for the Homework Help program is Nicole Desjardins and she can be reached at ndesjardins@rsu21.net with questions.

Free and reduced lunch applications must be completed yearly by RSU 21. We offer the availability of applying online and the process is safe, secure, private and available anytime, anywhere. SECOND CHANCE BREAKFAST
The MSK cafe offers 2nd chance breakfast between 1st and 2nd blocks in the main lobby for any student who would like to purchase a breakfast meal or snack.  We offer grab and go meals with cereal or breakfast items for $1.75 or free if you qualify for free or reduced meals.

AFTER SCHOOL SNACKS
Snacks are available to purchase every day after school beginning on Monday, September 10th  in the MSK cafetorium until 2:15 p.m. Purchases are made through student lunch accounts and meet the smart snack guidelines. Power Snack Packs are only $1.00 and include student choice of 3 items from a selection of foods. Options are available for students who qualify for free and reduced meals.

CLYNK
CLYNK bags are available at the office with tags already applied. THIS IS AN EASY WAY TO HELP MSK RAISE FUNDS BY RETURNING YOUR BOTTLES AND CANS USING THE CLYNK PROGRAM. To redeem bottles and cans: Fill the CLYNK bags, take your bags to any Hannaford, then scan each bag with the hand scanner and place your bags inside the unlocked door at any Hannaford/CLYNK bottle return location. Your bottles and cans will be sent to CLYNK to be counted and a credit will be applied to our MSK CLYNK account to be used for student support. PLEASE HELP YOURSELF TO CLYNK BAGS ANY TIME YOU VISIT MSK!

MSK CLUBS
A variety of clubs start up at different times throughout the school year depending on student and staff interests.  We will announce club opportunities as they start up both in this weekly bulletin and through student announcements during the school day.  Stay tuned!

1st Quarter:

NEW: YEARBOOK CLUB
Are you creative? Do you like technology? Join the Yearbook Club!  Meetings are held on Thursdays throughout the year and the 1st meeting is October 18th. Everyone is welcome! Advisors are Ann Kennedy (akennedy@rsu21.net) and Julia Gottlieb (jgottlieb@rsu21.net). 

BEGINNING GUITAR
This club takes place every Monday after school in room 614 until October 29th. The advisor is Mr. Fogg. Do you have a guitar but have no idea how to play it?  Would you like to learn?  Join Mr. Fogg on Monday's from 2:15 - late bus where he will provide a brief overview of the absolute essentials you need to know to start playing guitar.  He'll cover the basics like how to properly tune and change guitar strings, and cover concepts like chords, chord changes/progressions, major/minor scales and basic songwriting skills.  He might even teach you his "chicken nuggets" song! Requirements: You must bring your own guitar (no ukulele's).  No experience required.  If you have any questions please email bfogg@rsu21.net.

BIRDING CLUB
This club meets every other Wednesday to explore the natural world around us mainly through viewing the birds which can be found within the RSU 21 district. The next meeting will be on October 3rd and we will be exploring the Kennebunk Plains, home of Upland Sandpipers, Vesper Sparrows and Black Racers. See Mr. Hall in room 611 for more information or contact Nathan Hall at nhall@rsu21.net for questions.

CIVIL RIGHTS TEAM 
The Civil Rights Team is a club that engages our school community in thinking and talking about issues related to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation.  Please email Mrs. McGlashan at rmcglashan@rsu21.net with questions. 

GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB (NEW)
This girls only club aims to close the gender gap in technology.  Girls learn to build apps, design games, build websites, and develop friendships through code. We are proud to announce that MSK's Girls Who Code club project from two years ago is featured in this year’s GWC curriculum. We are excited about starting up again and will meet every other Thursday after school in the Swift Center throughout the year (Current dates are: Oct. 4th &18th, Nov. 1st & 15th, Dec. 6th). The coaches are Jennifer Maher and Jae Allain.

6TH GRADE MATH TEAM
The 6th grade math team will practice on Mondays beginning October 15th.  Practice will be held in Mrs. Neale's room (806) from 2:15 until 3:45. You can reach Mrs. Neale at eneale@rsu21.net with questions.

7TH & 8TH GRADE MATH TEAMS

OUTING CLUB
Our community is surrounded by amazing rivers to fish and canoe, beaches with waves to surf, and mountains to climb. A web of hiking and mountain biking trails connects us to our local forests, lakes, and rivers. The MSK Outing Club is all about getting together to have fun adventuring the outdoors while sharing our passions. The outing club is open to all grades and takes place every Tuesday after school. Students can sign up on the whiteboard in Mr. Costello’s classroom (711). STRATEGY GAMES CLUB
All MSK students are invited to come and play a variety of strategy games such as, chess, Risk, Stratego, Mancala, Pandemic and others. Students are encouraged to bring any non-electronic board game or cards they would like to share as well. This club takes place on Wednesdays after school in Mr. Coleman’s classroom (room 710) on the following dates: 10/10, 10/17, 10/24 and 10/31. The Student Council’s first meeting was held on Wednesday, September 19th. KENNEBUNK PARIS TRIP 2019

Next spring, Mr. Williams (MSK French teacher), will be taking interested Kennebunk students (grades 7-12) to Paris and Versailles over April Vacation. This is not a school-sponsored trip. 

The in-depth exploration of Paris allows time to appreciate the neighborhoods, cuisine, and culture of the city, while students flex their navigation, budgeting, and language skills. Choosing the perfect bistro, brasserie, café or crêperie for dinner each evening, preparing for a picnic in the Jardins de Luxembourg, and shopping on the Champs-Elysées will provide a lifetime of memories for everyone.

7th Grade Kieve Update

Dear 7th grade parents and guardians,

Despite the weather, students are having a wonderful time at Kieve. The rain let up shortly after they arrived on Monday and students were able to get outside for some team building activities. Though Tuesday had its wet moments, students were able to proceed with indoor activities and challenges. Mrs. Parkhurst was able to join students on Monday and Mr. Bouchard is at camp for Wednesday and Thursday. 

Reminders:
1) For those parents traveling up to Kieve on Thursday, the workshop begins at 9am with lunch at 11am and departure at 11:30am
2) For those parents picking up from Kieve but not attending the workshop or lunch, please arrive no later than 11am
3) Students who are not picked up from Kieve will return to MSK for a dismisal time of 1:30pm. Parents are asked to come into the gym to pick up their child at 1:30 so they are able to transport luggage home.

START WITH HELLO WEEK
Our school was excited to support the Sandy Hook Promise work this past week, in particularly the Start With Hello initiative.  We developed and carried out three different activities during the week.  First of all, thank you to the Civil Rights Team for preparing and announcing a positive message each day to our students and staff.  These messages centered around acceptance and being a good person to everyone and they were very well received.  On Tuesday all students and staff wore name tags in an effort to have our students know more people, and to more easily meet people and know their names.  Finally, on Thursday we did a homeroom switch where different grade level homerooms got together and conducted activities to introduce our students to others who they may not have known.  A big thank you to everyone who participated and help make Start With Hello week at MSK a success.

7TH GRADE - KIEVE PARENT REMINDER
The luggage and medication drop off for Kieve is this Sunday, September 30th. The gym doors will open at 5:00 pm and everything must be dropped off before 6:30 pm. Please be sure that all items are clearly marked with your child’s name.

THE SANDY HOOK PROMISE COMMUNITY/PARENT FORUM- OCT 2ND AT KHS
As part of the District’s commitment to school and community safety, RSU 21 is partnering with the Sandy Hook Promise to educate our community on how to prevent violence in our schools and at home. Please help RSU 21 welcome Neil Larkin from the Sandy Hook Promise at a Community & Parent Forum. Mr. Larkin will introduce two of their programs to our community and continue to work with our staff throughout the week to integrate them into our district culture.

The programs are:
Know the Signs  By knowing the signs, you have the power to intervene and get help for that person.  Your actions can save lives.
Say Something is an education and awareness program that provides tools and practices to:
Recognize the signs & signals of a potential threat – especially in social media
Teach and instill in participants how to take action
Drive awareness and reinforce the need to Say Something

Join Us:Tuesday, October 2, 2018 in the Kennebunk High School Theater. We will offer 2 sessions, 6pm and 7pm  *The content of the material will be appropriate for all members of our community Grade 6 and above.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED, VOLUNTEERED AND SUPPORTED OUR SUPERWALK TODAY.  IT WAS A FUN AND SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL WIDE EVENT.

The parent group will share specifics in next week's bulletin and let us know how much money was raised to support MSK.

7TH & 8TH GRADE DANCE
Our 1st dance is scheduled for tonight, Friday, September 21st and is hosted by the Baxter Team. Dances take place from 6:30pm-8:30pm and are open to all 7th and 8th graders.  The cost is $5.00 -- refreshments will be available for purchase. 

All proceeds are divided among the 7th and 8th grade teams to help defray expenses for team events.  Please note:  a) If a student is absent from school on the day of a dance, they may not attend.  A doctor’s note is required for appointments causing your child to be excused from some portion of the school day.  b) Students who have had an in-school or out-of-school suspension on the day of a dance will not be allowed to attend.  c) School dress code remains in effect. 

START WITH HELLO WEEK
MSK is happy to support Start With Hello week, September 24-28.  Start With Hello is a program affiliated with our Sandy Hook Promise work.  Next week we will be encouraging our students to reach out to those around them in an effort to welcome all students with kindness.  Our civil rights team will be sponsoring a daily announcement pertaining to being kind and meeting new people.  On Tuesday all of our students and staff will apply name tags in homeroom to invite the creation of new relationships amongst our students and staff.  Everyone is encouraged to reach out and greet someone new they may not have known.  Finally, our third activity on Thursday will be a grade level home room switch-a-roo where teachers will match up students from different homerooms, again in an effort to create new relationships.

ATHLETICS
All fall sports have begun. Please make sure that you have provided us with the Medical Release form signed by a physician and you have filled out an Athletic Card and the Concussion Management form online through RankOne. This can be found by going to http://athletics.rsu21.net and clicking on the Rank One tab. Each athlete needs to have these three things completed before they will be allowed to participate. 1st Quarter:

BEGINNING GUITAR
This club takes place every Monday after school in room 614 until October 29th. The advisor is Mr. Fogg. Do you have a guitar but have no idea how to play it?  Would you like to learn?  Join Mr. Fogg on Monday's from 2:15 - late bus where he will provide a brief overview of the absolute essentials you need to know to start playing guitar.  He'll cover the basics like how to properly tune and change guitar strings, and cover concepts like chords, chord changes/progressions, major/minor scales and basic songwriting skills.  He might even teach you his "chicken nuggets" song! Requirements: You must bring your own guitar (no ukulele's).  No experience required.  If you have any questions please email bfogg@rsu21.net.

BIRDING CLUB
This club will meet every other Wednesday, beginning next week September 19th.  Mr. Hall (6th grade science teacher) is the advisor. Please meet in room 611 to hear about exploring the natural world around us mainly through viewing the birds which can be found within the RSU 21 district. 

Each meeting we will be exploring a different type of habitat within the district. In addition to identifying birds, we will be looking at plants, insects, mammals, and other interesting aspects of our local natural world. There will also be a small nature photography element of this club. 

Please note, that many of the meetings for this club will be off of school property but within the district. Parent permission will be needed for students to attend each meeting. Students will also need rides from the meeting location at around 4:00 pm. Please contact Nathan Hall at nhall@rsu21.net for questions.

CIVIL RIGHTS TEAM 
The Civil Rights Team is a club that will engage our school community in thinking and talking about issues related to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation.  Future dates will be announced and Mrs. McGlashan can be reached at rmcglashan@rsu21.net with questions. 

7TH & 8TH GRADE MATH TEAMS

OUTING CLUB
Our community is surrounded by amazing rivers to fish and canoe, beaches with waves to surf, and mountains to climb. A web of hiking and mountain biking trails connects us to our local forests, lakes, and rivers. The MSK Outing Club is all about getting together to have fun adventuring the outdoors while sharing our passions. The outing club is open to all grades and takes place every Tuesday after school. Our first meeting will take place after school next Tuesday, September 11th, in Mr. Costello's room and we will plan this fall's outing adventures. Students can sign up on the whiteboard in the MSK lobby in front of the office. KENNEBUNK PARIS TRIP 2019

Next spring, Mr. Williams (MSK French teacher), will be taking interested Kennebunk students (grades 7-12) to Paris and Versailles over April Vacation. This is not a school-sponsored trip. 

The in-depth exploration of Paris allows time to appreciate the neighborhoods, cuisine, and culture of the city, while students flex their navigation, budgeting, and language skills. Choosing the perfect bistro, brasserie, café or crêperie for dinner each evening, preparing for a picnic in the Jardins de Luxembourg, and shopping on the Champs-Elysées will provide a lifetime of memories for everyone.

NWEA TESTING AT MSK
NWEA tests for reading take place next Tuesday, September 18th and will happen place in homerooms from 7:30-9:30 a.m. We ask parents to help with the following:

- That your child makes every effort to be in school
- That your child is on time to school, as we will be testing in the morning
- That your child is well rested and has breakfast (please note that breakfast will continue to be available in the school cafeteria)
- Remind your child to do the best they can.

7TH & 8TH GRADE DANCE
Our 1st dance is scheduled for Friday, September 21st and is hosted by the Baxter Team. Dances take place from 6:30pm-8:30pm and are open to all 7th and 8th graders.  The cost is $5.00 -- refreshments will be available for purchase. 

All proceeds are divided among the 7th and 8th grade teams to help defray expenses for team events.  Please note:  a) If a student is absent from school on the day of a dance, they may not attend.  A doctor’s note is required for appointments causing your child to be excused from some portion of the school day.  b) Students who have had an in-school or out-of-school suspension on the day of a dance will not be allowed to attend.  c) School dress code remains in effect. 

ATHLETICS
All fall sports have begun. Please make sure that you have provided us with the Medical Release form signed by a physician and you have filled out an Athletic Card and the Concussion Management form online through RankOne. HOMEWORK HELP
Homework Help has begun and runs every Monday-Wednesday that school is in session from 2:15 until the late bus. Students can stay and get their work done in a quiet, structured environment. Please note: Once students sign in to this after school program, they are required to stay the entire time until 3:45 unless a parent calls the main office to dismiss them early.   This year, the advisor for the Homework Help program is Nicole Desjardins and she can be reached at ndesjardins@rsu21.net with questions.

MSK PTG - SUPERWALK IS SET FOR  FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
We are pleased to kick off our pledge drive for our 6th annual SUPERWALK fundraiser on Friday, September 21st. This successful event is our ONE major fundraiser of the year.  Students are asked to raise pledges to fund the MSK PTG grant fund. This fund is used to support teacher grants, pay for the ever-rising cost of field trips and support new school initiatives. We are in need of your support! Students were given pledge envelopes during the first week of classes.  Please remind your child to seek pledges and return the envelope to their advisor before or on the day of the walk. STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council will be holding its first meeting on Wednesday, September 19th after school until 3:45 p.m.  All students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate. We welcome new members and look forward to seeing past members attend this first important meeting.  We will be discussing projects and fundraisers for the year. The MSK Civil Rights Team will begin next Wednesday morning, September 18th at 8:00 a.m. and is open to students in all grades 6-8. This team typically meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 2:15 - 3:45 p.m. in room 612 with Mrs. McGlashan as the advisor. The next meeting, however, will be held on Wednesday, October 25th instead of Thursday. The Civil Rights Team is a club that will engage our school community in thinking and talking about issues related to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation.  The CRT will meet every other week throughout the year and will be active in ensuring that MSK is a safe and welcoming place for all students, staff, and community members.  Mrs. McGlashan can be reached at rmcglashan@rsu21.net with questions.

It’s been a great first week of school and we hope your child had as much fun as we did. LATE BUS
Late bus transportation begins Monday, September 10th at 4:00 and 4:10 p.m. each afternoon at the main entrance for students participating in co-curricular activities and those receiving extra academic help.  Late buses do not travel to all of the streets covered by regular transportation routes.  Students will be dropped off as close to home as possible, but should anticipate walking some distance. Be sure that you are familiar with the student code of conduct and corrective action regarding transportation (JICC) which may be viewed on the district website at https://sites.google.com/a/rsu21.net/rsu-21-policy-manual/system/app/pages/search?scope=search-site&q=bus.

FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES

Please note that  RSU 21 participates in the food program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture and the State Department of Educational and Cultural Services. The federal assistance under these programs, allows us to provide meals free or at a reduced price, dependent on family income. Free and Reduced applications can be completed online at http://rsu21.nlappscloud.com. The process is safe, secure, fast, private and available any time. The data from online applications is transmitted directly to the Nutrition office the same day you apply, allowing for faster approval. Paper applications may be requested by calling either the school office or the Food and Nutrition office at 985-9966.

Open House Dates: (All open houses begin at 6:30 p.m.)    
  6th Gr: Sept. 11th
  7th Gr: Sept. 12th
  8th Gr: Sept. 13th    
              
Please remember that the school day begins at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week and at 9:00 a.m. on late start Wednesdays.  Daily attendance and punctual arrival to school is extremely important to each student’s educational development.   It is also IMPORTANT that parents telephone (467-8004) the school if a child is going to be absent or tardy.  The office is open at 7:00 a.m. and calls should be made as early in the morning as possible.

Don’t forget, LATE-START WEDNESDAYS BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 12th. If your child rides a bus to school, it will arrive approximately 1 ½ hours later than its regular time on late start Wednesdays.

Be sure to save the date for our upcoming Parent Athletic Info Night on Thursday, August 30th at 6:00 p.m. at MSK. Sign-ups for the Fall season will take place during the first week of school and the first day of practice will be Monday, September 10th. Fall Season Opportunities = 6th-7th-8th grade co-ed cross country; 6th-7th-8th grade co-ed tennis; 7th grade boys soccer; 8th grade boys soccer; 7th grade girls soccer; 8th grade girls soccer; 7th grade girls field hockey; 8th grade girls field hockey.
