RSU 21 is pleased to announce Ellen Towne as our new Director of Pre Kindergarten.
Ellen has a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies, a Master’s in Special Education, and is completing an advanced degree in Educational Leadership. She has taught Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the Portland Public Schools and has been teaching Kindergarten in RSU 21 since 1994. Kennebunk Elementary School Principal Ryan Quinn states that, “Ellen will be a great fit for the new Pre K Director position here in RSU 21. She has been in leadership roles for many years in our district including Team Leader positions at Cousins School and Kennebunk Elementary School. She is a hard worker and is known for always putting the needs of children first.”
The search process included candidates from within Maine, outside of Maine, and even an international applicant. A strong group of finalists were interviewed during a full day process on March 5th. Since this is a district-wide program, the interview committee was comprised of teachers from Mildred L. Day School, Consolidated School, and Kennebunk Elementary School. Ellen was the unanimous choice. Kindergarten teacher, Ashley Baker-Koch participated in the process and shared, “Ellen has dedicated her career to supporting the unique needs of our youngest learners and their families, which made her stand out from a pool of highly qualified applicants. In her interview she demonstrated thoughtfulness, creativity, and enthusiasm for helping this new program reach its highest potential.”
Although Ellen’s new role will officially begin on July 1st, she is excited to lead the interview committees in hiring Pre Kindergarten teachers and educational technicians this spring. Upon accepting this position she shared, “I am absolutely thrilled about the opportunity we have ahead of us as we develop an engaging Pre-Kindergarten program for the fall. I am so proud that the district has supported this initiative as a universal program for all students, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the families and youngest students in the district.” Please join us in welcoming Ellen to this new role.
