GCSA - EMPLOYEE COMPUTER/DEVICE AND INTERNET USE 
 

RSU 21 technology devices, network and Internet access (collectively, “technology”) are provided to support the educational mission of the schools. Employees are provided the use of school-owned devices to fulfill their job responsibilities. 

This policy and the school unit’s rules for “acceptable use” of the District’s technology also apply to devices issued directly to staff, whether in use at school or off school premises. 

Employees are permitted to use privately-owned devices at school with prior authorization from the Superintendent/designee, provided they comply with this policy and the school unit’s rules for use of technology. 

PERSONAL USE OF SCHOOL-OWNED COMPUTERS/DEVICES 

School unit computers/devices, networks, and Internet services are provided for purposes related to school programs and operations and performance of employees’ job responsibilities. Incidental personal use of school-owned devices and technology is permitted as long as such use: 

A. Does not interfere with an employee’s job responsibilities and performance; 

B. Does not interfere with system operations or other system users; 

C. Does not violate this policy, rules implementing this policy, or any other Board policies, administrative procedures or school rules; 

D. “Incidental personal use” is defined as use by an individual employee for occasional personal communications which do not interfere or conflict with theirjob responsibilities. 

COMPLIANCE IS MANDATORY 

Compliance with the school unit’s policies and rules concerning use of devices is mandatory. An employee who violates this policy and/or any rules governing use of the school unit’s devices or technology shall be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Illegal uses of the school unit’s computers will also result in referral to law enforcement. 

NO EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY 

RSU 21 computers/devices, networks, and Internet services remain under the control, custody, and supervision of the school unit at all times. The school unit reserves the right to monitor all computer and Internet activity by employees and other system users. Employees have no expectation of privacy in their use of school computers/devices, networks, and Internet services, including email messages , stored files, and Internet access logs. 

NOTIFICATION OF POLICY AND RULES 

Employees shall be informed of this policy and rules pertaining to use of devices and District technology through handbooks, the school website, and/or other means selected by the Superintendent. 

IMPLEMENTATION AND RULES 

The Superintendent is responsible for developing rules to implement this policy. 

Additional administrative procedures or school rules governing the day-to-day management and operations of the school unit’s computer system may be implemented, consistent with Board policies and rules. The Superintendent may delegate specific responsibilities to the IT Director and others as they deem appropriate.
