IGF - CURRICULUM DESIGN
The Curriculum Design Committee shall be established to review kindergarten through grade twelve curriculum, assessment and professional development and make recommendations to the Board of School Directors.
The committee shall be organized and shall function and operate in accordance with the following:
A. Recognition
The RSU 21 Board of School Directors formally recognizes and supports the Curriculum Design Committee as the representative organization commissioned to study curriculum, professional development, assessment and those related instructional areas which directly or indirectly affect the education of students in RSU 21.
The Curriculum Design Committee shall investigate and make recommendations on development of curriculum, assessment and professional development through the office of the Superintendent of Schools to the Board of School Directors for final approval.
B. Membership
Membership on the Committee shall consist of:
1. One representative from each building K-8 and elected annually by each building staff. The election normally shall be held in early September. Conducting the election in each building shall be the responsibility of the Principal.
2. Two School Board members appointed annually by the Board chair person.
3. The Assistant Superintendent as a permanent member.
4. Two principals appointed annually by the superintendent.
5. The high school curriculum coordinator as a permanent member.
6. Two students selected annually by the K.H.S. Administration.
7. One representative elected annually by the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Education Association.
8. Two citizens shall be recommended by the Assistant Superintendent to serve one-year terms. They shall be appointed according to board policy. Consideration will be given to ensure representation from all segments of the community.
The Chairperson of the Curriculum Design Committee shall be the Assistant Superintendent. The Secretary shall be elected at the first meeting of the year.
C. Scope
The scope of the RSU 21 Curriculum Design Committee shall include such matters as curriculum improvements, scheduling, teaching techniques and strategies, pilot programs, student assessment, research, professional development, and such other matters as related to effective instructional operations.
D. Committees
In order for those persons who would be affected by the Curriculum/Design Committee recommendations to have an opportunity to be involved, the Curriculum Design Committee may establish subcommittees or ad hoc committees for specific projects.
E. Individual Initiative for Suggestions
The Curriculum Design Committee shall hear the initiation of ideas and suggestions by individual teachers, administrators, Board members, students, parents, or other interested persons. Such requests to be heard shall be presented in writing to the Assistant Superintendent.
F. Rules of Procedure
The Curriculum Design Committee shall establish its own rules of procedure.
G. Meetings
The Curriculum Design Committee shall meet during the school year and at the discretion of the Chairperson for additional needed time.
H. Reports
The following procedures shall apply:
1. All reports and/or recommendations shall be made by the Curriculum Design Committee to the office of the Superintendent for review and presentation to the Board of School Directors. The Curriculum Design Committee may present the reports and/or recommendations to the Board of School Directors.
2. Any reports and/or recommendations made by the Curriculum Design Committee which are not approved shall be rejected in writing and shall contain the rationale for the rejection. Rejections may occur at two levels: (1) the Superintendency level-at which the rejection will be submitted simultaneously to the Board and to the Curriculum Design Committee, and (2) the Board level-at which the rejection shall be submitted simultaneously to the Superintendent and to the Curriculum Design Committee.
I. Functional Considerations
1. The Curriculum Design Committee shall make a monthly report of its activities and submit it to the Superintendent for transmittal to the Board of School Directors.
