  • Section I: Instruction

IKE - STUDENT EVALUATION, PROMOTION AND RETENTION

1. Grading Policies

Grading policies for all grade levels will be developed by Principals under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools who will approve all such policies.  Grading policies will be consistent with the Policies of the Board and will include an explanation of the following where applicable: the permanent records, incompletes, graduation honors, promotion, grade point average (rank in class), and progression on standards of learning.  Grading policies will be published annually in faculty and student handbooks in each school.

2. Dissemination of Information

Through the District’s methods of student evaluation and parent/guardian-student-teacher communications, the District strives to meet the following objectives:

A. Parents/Guardians will be informed regularly, at least four times a year, as to the progress their children are making in school.

B. Parents/Guardians will be alerted and conferred with as soon as possible when a student’s performance or attitude becomes unsatisfactory or shows marked or sudden deterioration.

C. Insofar as possible, distinctions will be made between a student’s attitude and academic performance.

D. At comparable levels, the District will strive for consistency in grading and reporting, except when inappropriate for certain classes or students.

E. When grades are given, the school staff will take particular care to explain the meaning of the marks and symbols to students and parents/guardians.

F. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held at least once a year.

As far as possible, retention in grades K-8 will be decided through conferences involving the Principal, teachers, and parents.  The guidance counselor and other professional staff will participate as appropriate.  Parents will be notified as early as possible that retention is being considered, and except in very unusual circumstances no later than March 15.  The Principal shall be responsible for making the final decision as to retention and assignment.  Decisions on special education students will be made in consultation with the Director of Special Services.

Grade placement at the high school level is determined by fulfillment of requirements.  For grades 9-12 promotion, retention and acceleration are dependent on satisfactory grades in individual courses, progression on standards and attendance.

Insofar as possible, retention will be decided through conferences involving the Principals, teacher, and parents.  The guidance counselor and other professional staff will enter into the conference, if and when necessary.  Parents will be notified as early as possible that retention is being considered, and except in very unusual circumstances no later than March 15.  The Principal shall be responsible for making the final decision as to retention and assignment.

A standardized scale will be completed and considered when making decisions concerning promotion and retention.

Any necessary retention or promotion should take place as early in a student’s educational career as possible.  Only in unusual circumstances should a child be retained more than once.
