JFABB - INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

  1. Purpose
    The Regional School Unit 21 (RSU 21) Board of Directors believes that international exchange programs (the “Program”) enhance the educational environment of RSU 21 by fostering global citizenship, cross-cultural understanding, and academic diversity.  The goal of the Program is to provide opportunities for local and international students to serve as ambassadors for their country, to engage in learning about foreign cultures, to participate in rigorous academic programming, and to enjoy social experiences with students from around the globe.
     
  2. Definitions
    For the purposes of this policy and its accompanying procedures, the following definitions apply:
    1. International Students:
      This term pertains to those students of foreign nationality who visit the United States for a specified period of time and who are enrolled in an American school with a J-1 Cultural Exchange Visa.
    2. J-1 Cultural Exchange Visa:
      This visa is issued for no more than one academic school year to students who will participate in the U.S. Department of State–designated Exchange Visitor Program. This visa is authorized for one-time use for the approved program period. The student must maintain a residence in a foreign country to which they intend to return after completing their stay in the United States. The program is administered by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor organization.
       
  3. Standards
    The Superintendent or designee will develop and implement administrative procedures necessary to carry out the Program, consistent with applicable laws and regulations.

    Nothing in this policy or accompanying administrative procedures is intended to, nor shall it be interpreted to, deny any student the right to a free public education regardless of their immigration status in accordance with applicable law.
