JICB - CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY BY STUDENTS

Textbooks, other school property, and facilities are available to district students for their use.  Each student is responsible for loss or damage beyond normal wear.  Students will be billed for the replacement cost of such materials.  Each building principal shall develop procedures for the determination of loss or damage and the collection of owed funds.  Staff should inspect returned school property to assess possible damage as appropriate.

If reimbursement is not forthcoming within a reasonable time:

A. Damage to school property may be recovered in a civil action to obtain the permitted “double the damage;” or

B. Costs of lost, destroyed or damaged school books and instructional appliances may be recovered by requesting the municipal assessor to include the value in the next municipal tax of the delinquent parent.

Funds collected will be deposited into the District’s general fund.

The Superintendent or his/her/their designee shall see that students and parents are notified annually of their responsibilities under this policy, such as by publication in pupil/parent handbooks.
